Parshas Ki Seitzei begins with a warning. When Am Yisrael goes out to war, they must be aware of the temptation presented by the Eishet Yefat Toar, the woman of beautiful appearance. Chazal teach us that the ultimate battle is the battle within. If Am Yisrael can conquer the Yetzer Hara within themselves, they will be able to overcome their enemies as well. What can the laws of Eishet Yefat Toar teach us about how to conquer the Yetzer Hara?

There are three ways in which the Yetzer Hara can trap us. It can cause us to become stuck in the past, too focused on the present, or overly concerned with the future. We know that Hashem is היה, הוה, ויהיה, He was, He is, and He will be. To overcome the Yetzer Hara, we must learn to see our lives from this broader perspective.

Just like in a military battle, we must understand the strategy of our enemy. The Yetzer Hara tries to give us tunnel vision, causing us to see a limited perspective.

The Fight Is Rigged!

Moses announces the victory in the same breath as the war. The Torah says you go out upon your enemies, not against them — and that one preposition is the map for every inner battle you will fight.

When Someone You Love Gets Lost

The mitzvah is to return what is lost, and the Torah says lo suchal l'hisaleim — you cannot hide yourself. Some of the people in our lives have not lost an object. They have lost themselves.

Don't Let It Get Cold

Amalek did not need to win; it was enough to lower the temperature. The fifth step toward Rosh Hashanah, on what happens to a decision once the warmth behind it goes out.

Foul to Fragrant

The Chelbana stinks on its own and is essential to the Ketores. Kilayim forbids mixing what cannot be mixed — but teshuvah says a person's nature was never fixed in the first place.

The kids' page

Every issue folds out to a back page built for the children at the table: the parsha in pictures, a puzzle, and one question worth arguing about over the soup.

Re'eh: Gematria of the Beit HaMikdash

August 6, 2026

Reb Moshe Herskovits works the week's numbers on film as well as on paper — the same column you read on the back page, opened up.

Every episode

It arrives Thursday night.

One email, once a week: the new issue as a print-ready PDF, before it reaches the shuls on Friday morning. Nothing else is ever sent to that list, and you can leave it in one line back.

Your partnership

Somebody paid for the sheet you just read.

Every week's print run is covered by one family or one business. It costs nothing to pick up, which is the whole point — and that only works because somebody takes the week.
